Long Hairstyles 2012

Men’s Long Hairstyles

Short hair is the norm for most men. However, long hairstyles are increasingly becoming popular because of its attractiveness and the possibility to make a style statement. A properly cared long hairstyle on a man can be very appealing to women. There are however a number of considerations that you might wish to bear in mind before starting to let your hair grow past the shoulders. Long hair does not suit everybody and you should consider your case well before taking a decision. Some key considerations include:

  • Your Job/Profession—some jobs cannot allow very long hair for safety reasons (e.g. when dealing with machinery). In other jobs, while it may not pose a safety risk, it is still frowned upon (for example in high-end cuisine). It is therefore wise to determine your employer’s or (would-be employer’s) policies before changing for the long hairstyle.
  • Quantity of hair—long hair looks best when it is uniform over the scout. Having bald patches or balding crown may seriously affect your looks for the worse.
  • Hair color—most colors go with long hair with exceptions such as dull gray.
  • Additional hair care—most men are not used to taking care of their hair. Yet, with a long hairstyle, there is a basic minimum of hair care that has to be done. Shampooing and conditioning are among them. Regular trimming will deal with problems of split ends and will make the hair appear fresh.

Types of Men’s Long hairstyles

  1. Long and straight—the hair may be worn at the shoulders or even below. A portion of the hair may be used to hide part of the face and eyes. This adds to the feeling of rebellion and mystery to the look. This style requires a minimum of combing throughout the day.
  2. Braids—worn by stars like Snoop Dogg, braids are meant for the casual look. It is an uncommon and unique hairstyle that will make you stand out of the throng.
  3. Dreadlocks—very popular in African and Rastafarian culture, it is also gaining popularity in more mainstream cultures as well. The knots and mats of the dreadlock look are simply wild!
  4. Mullet—involves a short haircut in the front and sides with the back being left quite long.
  5. Shag—sort of a descendent of the hippies, the shaggy hairstyle looks disorderly at strategic places. It is mainly for young men with “cool” attitude.
  6. Ponytails—simple to make and wear.
  7. Beachy—with long geometrically cut bangs in the front and hair falling pretty near the shoulder at the back. Bangs can be made into triangular shapes and could cover an eye. This is a very casual look but gives strong character to the bearer.
  8. Long and Wavy—also a casual look; the hair flows freely to the shoulders. It can vary in length with graduated looks or single layered ones. It can also be messy. It can also be worn pulled back in a casual and elegant look.
