Long Hairstyle Updos

Long hair is excellent for virtually any style but updos in particular come very easily and with surprising results. With long hair, updos can be of any shape or size since the stylist has more room to work with. As with any updo, but particularly for long hairs, it is unwise to wash the hair on the day of the styling. However, your hair does need to be in good condition. Thus, one day before the styling, give the hair a deep conditioning treatment. Some popular long hair updos are described below:

Classic Chignon (The Bun)

The bun is the classic updo style for long hairs. The hair is coiled up and stitched against the head with hair sticks in a crossed design. Sometimes small ponytail holders come in handy but they must be carefully concealed under the bun. A variant of this style is to allow hair to fall to the shoulders (half updo fashion) and have them curled.

The Topknot

After doing braids, bind the end of each braid with a cord. Cross the braid over one another. Hold the braids at the crown and tie in a knot. Continue to tie until you have a double knot. Secure it with a decorative hairpin.

The Flamenco

Need a little Spanish Twist? The Flamenco is an elegant hairstyle that suits many formal occasions such as proms and weddings. Separate the hair into two sections using the fingers. Coil each section into a bun and fasten each with hair sticks. This style is great for very long hair as one bun may not be sufficient to hold all the hair.

The French Tuck

French tucks are great with long hair but are also good with shoulder length hair. It’s a great style for prom. After doing a French Braid, secure the ends with a ponytail holder. Tuck the end of the braid underneath the hairline and add a booby pin or two. Weave decorative hair sticks throughout the braided portion.

Figure 8 Bun

Brush the hair and gather at the crown. Hold with a ponytail holder. Coil the hair along its length so that you obtain a column of hair. With the end of the column in hand, pull out and lay it flat on the head in the form of an eight. Secure with hair sticks.

Victorian 3 braid

Victorian hairstyles were famous for their beauty during their epoch. However, they can be somewhat complicated so that modern women rarely have time for them. Here is a simple Victorian updo.

  • Have a basic ponytail
  • Loosen ponytail slightly and part just above and below the band
  • Reach through the part and grab the ponytail to create a flip-through
  • Divide the ponytail into three section and have someone hold two of these
  • Divide and braid these sections in turn
  • Twist the braids and tuck into the flip-through. Hold with pins

There are numerous other updo styles for long hair including Gibson Tuck, Double Braided Bun…etc.
