Long Emo Hairstyles

Anything “emo” is strongly in these days. Yet, even an emo couldn’t really define what being “emo” is all about! Without engaging into a debate about it, emo refers to alternative fashion. In other words, anything (hair, clothing, makeup) that do not conform to mainstream standards could be called emo. The emo style is meant to reflect the personal style of the wearer. It is related to the emotions of the wearer, hence the term “emo”. Emo could be said to be the descendent of the radical “punk” movement of the 80s.

What “emo” hairstyles are like?

Because it is deeply personal, one person’s emo style may be called “punk” or “goth” by another. There is no real hard and fast rule about emo hairstyles but they share some attributes in general:

  • Texture—it is common to find that emo hairs are textured by layering, cutting unevenly, spiking or with other techniques. The “piecy” look, which emphasizes the hair ends, is also very common.
  • Contrast—emos like to have two or even three colors in one hairstyle (e.g. black with blonde shades).
  • Color—often very bright colors are used (vibrant red, orange, platinum, blonde…etc.).
  • Loose hair—this style rarely includes accessories, leaving the hair loose (even though a lot of hair products may be used).
  • Bangs—often obscuring the eyes
  • Messy—the crown is unruly, reflecting the emotions of the bearer…

Getting your emo style

The point behind emo is that no one can really tell you what style is good or bad. It’s all up to you! Finally something you do by yourself! This style does not even need a professional stylist (not sure there are that many anyway!). You can even do it at home. Since it is relatively unusual to have an emo style, you can have the craziest cuts and nobody could say anything! The point of emo hairstyles is to translate how you felt at the time of the hairdo into the style. If you felt confused, you might go for an unruly or messy look. If you are feeling quite angry or excited, spikes would convey your feelings well.

While it is pointless to describe particular hairstyles, it might be useful to you to learn what other people generally do:

  • Most people like to have their hair dyed coal black before starting the emo look. Dyed hair looks quite unnatural adding to the exotic feature. You can then add your shade of color to it at will (green, yellow, orange, whatever).
  • Use lots of gel to style the hair the way you want it. There is no emo hair without gels! You can make stiff bangs at the front and spikes at the top. It is all up to you.
  • Crazy cuts really make the emo stand out. Chop up your hair, and have fun while doing it! You do not really need expensive equipment for it. Just a pair of scissors, razors and stylers would produce good results.
